29Sep Why Should You Consider a Sapphire Engagement Ring?

Does an engagement ring have to be a diamond? Certainly not! Whilst the jewellery industry’s marketing machine has spent millions trying to convince us that only diamonds are forever, there are signs that consumers are seeing the potential of other gemstones when it comes to popping the question.

An increasingly popular choice for engagement rings is sapphire, with high-profile ladies such as Kate Middleton, Penelope Cruz and Elizabeth Hurley all sporting blue sapphires on their left hands in recent years. There are some very good reasons why you might want to choose a sapphire over a diamond.

Sapphires last forever too

Perhaps most importantly, a sapphire is harder than almost every other gemstone. Why is that important? It means that the gem is durable and it is unlikely to be scratched or damaged by everyday use. Many other stones will not stand up to daily wear and tear.

Pick a colour that suits you

Sapphire also comes in many different colours, so there is plenty of scope for expressing your individuality. Whilst the cornflower blue sapphires are probably the best known, you can also find pink, orange, yellow, green and purple. Some examples will even change colour depending on whether you are standing in natural or artificial light!

Don’t break the bank

Last, but not least, a sapphire need not cost you a fortune. You can often find beautiful sapphires at a fraction of the cost of a similarly-sized diamond. So even if you prefer to have a colourless stone, then why not look at a white sapphire to see how much more cost effective that could be?

So when it comes to one of the most important decisions of your life, make sure you consider the sapphire option.
