Moyo Gemstones
Nineteen48 is one of the founding partners of the Moyo Gemstones program. You can purchase these stunning gemstones on the Moyo Gemstone category page.
This amazing program provides responsibly sourced gemstones from the female miners of the Umba Valley, Tanzania. These are truly beautiful gemstones, all tracked and traced. Moyo Gemstones is an ethical gemstone collaboration born in Tanzania. We are working with female artisanal gem miners of the Umba Valley to assure ruby, sapphire, tourmaline, amethyst and garnet from mine to market.
The program aims to empower women miners to work in a safe environment, with better conditions, provide improved financial security, and create stable and equitable markets for fair trade.

The pilot project is a collaboration between the non-governmental organization Pact, Anza Gems and Nineteen48, with input from the Tanzania Women Miners Association (TAWOMA) and a blockchain addition from Everledger.

What's behind a name?
Moyo nzuri means 'beautiful spirit' or 'blessed heart' in Swahili. In Shona, it means 'heart'. Moyo Gemstones represent a new kind of beauty. They are gems from the heart.
