Sinhalite

The sinhalite in our stock comes from an artisanal mine near Ratnapura (Sri Lanka), which is no longer in operation.

We do not currently source new sinhalite.

Ratnapura has been the focal point of gemstone mining and trading in Sri Lanka for generations. It is situated in the major gem mining region in Sabaragamuwa Province and is the provincial capital.

As well as numerous gem traders, lapidaries and jewellery makers, there is also an office of the National Gem and Jewellery Authority.

Nineteen48 specialises in responsibly sourced sapphires, tourmalines, spinels, garnets and more from selected artisanal mines in Sri Lanka and Tanzania. Through strong long-term relationships with our trusted network of miners and cutters in these countries, we can source gemstones with transparency, traceability and confidence.
