Tourmalines are a gemstone that comes in a huge colour range, and can also display several colours within one crystal.

Nineteen48 tourmalines are directly sourced from the women miners of East Africa. Most of the tourmalines here are from the Moyo Project, a responsible miner-to-market gemstone collaboration that works with women artisanal gem miners and their male allies in Tanzania. Nineteen48 is proud to be one of only three global partners that supply Moyo Gems to the trade.

The tourmalines from Tanzania typically display green, yellow, golden brown and occasional chrome green hues.

Other tourmalines are responsibly sourced from the famous Cruziero mine in Brazil and from Sri Lanka.

None of the tourmalines are treated in anyway.

The Chimwadzulu Mine is located in Ntcheu, in the Central Region of Malawi, south-east of the capital, Lilongwe.

The mine is known as a source of corundum and it has been producing sapphires and rubies since the 1950s. The gemstone extraction is achieved with a combination of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM).
