Amethyst is the name for the purple variety of quartz.

Nineteen48 amethyst is responsibly sourced from artisanal miners in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Quite often, large pieces of rough material is found which allows more innovative cuts in large sizes.

Nineteen48 amethyst is not treated in any way to affect the colour or clarity.

Nineteen48 is one of the commercial partners working with the women artisanal gem miners and their male allies in Tanzania and Kenya to deliver their gemstones to the international market.

We source our Moyo Gems specificially from miners in various communities in the Tanga region in north-east Tanzania, all of whom are members of the Tanzanian Women Miners' Association (TAWOMA).
