Moyo Gems, Tanzania

Sourced through our partner, Moyo Gems

🤝 Responsibly sourced through Nineteen48's trusted supply chain

A big and bold amethyst, with a pinkish purple colour, which was responsibly mined by a member of the Tanzanian Women Miners' Association (TAWOMA) in the Tanga region of north-eastern Tanzania as part of the Moyo Gemstones project. The stone comes from an artisanal mine and is traceable back to the individual miner.

It was cut and polished at our dedicated cutting workshop in Sri Lanka. The gemstone has some inclusions, but they do not detract from its beauty and would not be obvious once the stone has been set.

This gem has not been treated in any way.

Amethyst is the name for the purple variety of quartz.

Nineteen48 amethyst is responsibly sourced from artisanal miners in Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

Quite often, large pieces of rough material is found which allows more innovative cuts in large sizes.

Nineteen48 amethyst is not treated in any way to affect the colour or clarity.

Moyo Gems is a pioneering, miner-to-market, gemstone collaboration in East Africa.

Nineteen48 is one of the commercial partners working with the women artisanal gem miners and their male allies in Tanzania and Kenya to deliver their gemstones to the international market.

We source our Moyo Gems specificially from miners in various communities in the Tanga region in north-east Tanzania, all of whom are members of the Tanzanian Women Miners' Association (TAWOMA).
