This fancy cut, deep red garnet was responsibly mined by a member of the Tanzanian Women Miners' Association (TAWOMA) in the Tanga region of north-eastern Tanzania as part of the Moyo Gemstones project. The stone comes from an artisanal mine and is traceable back to the individual miner.

It was cut in this unusual shape at our dedicated cutting workshop in Sri Lanka.

It has good clarity, with a small inclusion on one corner, which is reflected in the price.

Garnet Step-cut Fancy Red

Garnets are a gemstone that many recognise in dark red shades. But garnet is a diverse group and can occur in many different hues including green, orange, purple , pink and more.

Many of Nineteen48’s garnets are responsibly sourced from artisanal miners in north-east Tanzania, who are part of the Moyo Gems project. They are typically red, purple or orange in colour, occasionally, there are small pieces of green garnet.

Other garnets are responsibly sourced from Sri Lanka, either from our the Nineteen48 artisanal mine near Kuruwita or through our trusted network of artisanal miners and mine owners.

We do not treat our garnets in any way.

Moyo Gems is a pioneering, miner-to-market, gemstone collaboration in East Africa.

Nineteen48 is one of the commercial partners working with the women artisanal gem miners and their male allies in Tanzania and Kenya to deliver their gemstones to the international market.

We source our Moyo Gems specificially from miners in various communities in the Tanga region in north-east Tanzania, all of whom are members of the Tanzanian Women Miners' Association (TAWOMA).
